What Is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the capacity of our society to thrive and progress without depleting the essential natural resources required for future existence. The long-term objective of sustainable development is supported by the implementation of systems, frameworks, and collaboration of global, national, and local entities. The concept of sustainability is built on the notion that natural resources on Earth are finite, emphasising the need for sustainable practices to maintain a delicate balance among the environment, economy, and equity. The movement towards sustainability ensures Earth remains habitable while effectively managing and reducing resource depletion (Greenpeace, 2023).

Different Types of Sustainability

There are three dimensions of sustainability; namely environmental, economic, and social, which provide a comprehensive framework for steering us toward a
sustainable future.

Environmental

Preserving ecological balance and ensuring the stability of Earth’s environmental systems, including air, water, soil, forests, and wildlife, even as they are utilised by humans (UCLA, 2021).

Economic

Focuses on enabling individuals to maintain independence, secure employment, and access necessary resources through inclusive accessible economic systems
(UCLA, 2021).

Social

It ensures that all individuals have access to basic human needs and sufficient resources within a community. These strong social systems play a crucial role in
fostering healthy and equitable societies (UCLA, 2021).
