A Holistic Approach
The Global Ecovillage Network embraces a holistic approach to sustainability. It understands the creativity and innovation which is needed to create ecovillages and combines the use of modern technology resources, together with traditional heritage and wisdom. This assists in addressing global issues of poverty and environmental destruction.
Many people are drawn to the idea of living a simpler way of life. In the current climate, they strive to be more sustainable and ecologically friendly by minimising their impact on the environment, utilising renewable energy sources, growing their own food and changing where they live.
Research now suggests that there are currently more than 10,000 ecovillages across the world, mainly in rural areas, which are off the grid, just like that in Matera, Italy (Wolfe, 2011)
The inhabitants of these more modern communities can vary in size ranging anywhere between fifty and two hundred and fifty, although some have more than
one thousand individuals (Iberdrola, n.d.).
As there are so many Eco Communities which are relevant to this project, I have provided a separate page of links to websites which you read if you wish.
(Global Ecovillage Network, n.d.).
When living in an eco-community, it is vital to communicate, enabling us to learn from each other’s shared objectives. This allows us to work together to achieve our goals towards a more sustainable future. As individuals, we gain a deeper understanding of the world around us and how Mother Earth can be helped in the long term.
